The point-of-view of a story hugely impacts the way it is told and its affect on the audience. For example, a story about a murder would be presented very differently if the murderer or a family member of the victim told it – and it would be different if a child or an adult was the narrator.
Choose a story (movie, novel, story, poem, play, etc.) and demonstrate this fact. Show us how the narrator/point-of-view/perspective changes or affects the story.

Perspective of a character in a story greatly affects how the story is told. One character could see and tell the story totally different then another might. In the short story " The cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe, there are two main characters, but they would narrate the story very differently. In the story, the character Motressor unexpectedley locks up the other main character Fortunado. If Montressor where the narrater, he would most likely make it seem like locking up Fortunado was no big deal and that he himself shouldn't be the one blamed for it. On the other hand, if Fortunado was the narrator, he would be trying to blame Montressor for what he did wrong and let the readers believe of what it felt like to be him getting locked up. Some stories are good because of the narrator and who's perspective it's told in.
Writers of a story, movie, and/or play give you a certain amount of knowledge about a character. They only give you the facts they want you to know. This leads you to think about them in certain ways. A good example of a movie that uses this is "Scream". The writer of the story made you think that one character did it then made you go against that thought and you would be clueless who is the murderer. The writer would do this to more than one character in the story, so you really had to think around obvious and hidden details that gave the murderers away. The amount of information the writer gives you(point of view on a character) on a character can effect the story vastly.
The perspective of a character in a story impacts on how the rest of the story is layed out. In the story " The cask of Amontillado",The point of view would totally change the mood and the way the story is told. If Fortunado was the narrator, it would totally baffle the minds of the reader because atleast half the story it showed how fortunado was drunk after he had visited the "carnival". But, it would also give another perspective of the story in that Fortunado had no idea what Montressor was doing
The point-of-view of a story hugely impacts the way it is told and its affect on the audience. For example, in the movie P.S I Love you there are two charaters that have very different opinions regarding Holly recieving letters from her dead husband. One of the charaters, Holly's husband, was dying of a brain tumor. As he was dying he made a plan to help his wife become a new person that was more independent. This plan was to send letters to her to start trying new things like jobs and hobbies. Her mother, on the other hand, thought it was terribly cruel. She didnt wont to put her daughter through that pain. Both the characters were looking out for the best interest of Holly and the audience coud be sympathetic to both parties.
Point of view is an element that drastically affects how a story unfolds. One situation that this can be seen in is that in a tale of good vs. evil. Die Hard is a great example of this situation. The story is told in a third person view, but even so, the perspective is definately favoring the "good guys". In this case, that party is Bruce Willis' character. The way this story is written makes you root for the anti-terrorist might of protagonist cop, John McLane. If it were narrated in favor of the Terrorist after $240 million dollars named Hans Gruber, you would find your self urging him to succeed in his crime. Point of view can play a very large part in the way a story is told.
Perspective is key to making a story, movie, or play sound better. For example, in the movie "Sandlot" the narrator is the geeky little boy who likes space. His ideas about situations in the story would differ from other characters if they told it. Like when the geeky little kid blew up the baseball field with the rocket, he said it was an accident. But if another character in the story told it, the character would of made it sound like it was all his fault and he is so stupid, and yada, yada, yada. It would make the movie sound so much more different if another person narrated it.Perspective is very important because it can make a movie sound good, or it can make it sound really good.
Point of view effects the story depending on who it is told by and how much they know about what they are talking about. For example, if someone very young is the narrarator, than what they think could be different from what really happened. An example is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. In the story, someone is inacuratley accused of a crime, but the narrarator is a young child so she is often confused and unsure of the situation. If the story had been told by the person accused of the crime, it would be a lot different and sound more accurate.
In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, the point-of-view greatly impacts how the story is told. The narrator, Sammy, views the three girls who walk into the A&P with bathing suits on as just free-spritited. Sammy doesn't really see anything wrong with what the girls are doing and thinks that people should be able to express themselves this way. However, if this story was told by Lengel, the manager of the A&P, the girls would be viewed as disrespectful to themselves and the rules of the store. Lengel, scolds the girls for coming into the store dressed the way they are. Sammy thinks Lengel is embarrassing the girls, but Lengel thinks the girls embarrassed themselves by coming to an A&P innapropriately dressed. So depending on the piont-of-view of the characters, the story could be told completely different.
Point of View is a very important asset of how a story is told and understood. In any of the "Home Alone" movies, the story wouldn't have been seen in nearly the same way if we saw the burglars point of view. We get to experience the creativity of the kid making the traps, which we wouldn't have experienced if we only saw the burglars point of view. If we only saw the burglars point of view (POW), then we wouldn't have seen the traps being built, but being that we see the kid's view, we can see the building, and use of the traps, so we get both views in part with the kid's POW. The movie would have just been silly violence without the building process, which wouldn't have made the movie nearly as enjoyable or interesting.
In the novel "You Don't Know Me" by David Klass, narrator is a young boy who is trying to fit in and has to struggle with his crazy girlfriend's dad and his abusive stepfather. This story would be totally different if it was told in a different point-of-view. For example, if the novel was told by the stepfather, you wouldn't think of him as such a bad person because he would try to sugarcoat the story and how he beat up the kid. If the book was told by the stepfather, you wouldn't get the full effect of what he is doing to the young boy.
If the story was told by the girlfriend's father, than it would be more about protecting his daughter from the kid.
No matter what story it is, it will always be at least a little different in each point-of-view. Like in this story, if it was the stepfather, you wouldn't think of him as such a bad person, or if it was told by the girlfriend's daughter, you would feel that the kid was bad.
Overall, the point-of-view matters.
In the book "Pretty Little Liars" by Sara Shepard, the narrators are four high school girls who receive threatening texts from a person named "A". The four girls each tell what they think about the texts there getting and all wonder why they're receiving them in the first place. This story would be totally different if the point-of-view was coming from the mysterious "A". The readers would understand why the girls were getting the texts, they would find out who "A" was, but the book wouldn't be as thrilling. As you can see, point-of-view is very important because it affects the genre of the book.
The point of view is a huge tool that an author can use to writing a good story. If an author wants to write a story about how a bunch of people feel about something he might want to use 3rd person. However, if the author uses 1st person then it might not help the reader fully understand how the people feel. Also a story can be told differently depending on who told it. If a brother and a sister get in a fight and the mom wants to hear what happened the two stories will be different making each one seem innocent and the other wrong. take a look at any of the characters from the short stories we read and try to imagine the story from a different characters point of view. the story completely changes. Take 'The Most Dangerous Game' for example. From Rainsfords point of view the game is horrible and sick. However, from General Zaroff's point of view the game is exiting and fun. Just by changing the point of view the story completely changes.
The point-of-view hugely impacts the way a story it is told by telling it from different people’s perspective on what has happened in that particular event. This affects the audience by describing each perspective of an event from different viewpoints. A story that demonstrates this affect is “Life and Death of Ivan Denisovich.” The story is viewed by 1st person, since it is talks about the hard work and struggles that occur around Ivan. The point of view had told about the character’s life and about everyone important in the story that interacts with Ivan such as troop leaders, guards, prisoners, ect. The story had had mainly focused on Ivan, showing everything observed in the camp through Ivan’s eyes. The story could be different if it was viewed from another character’s eyes. For example in the guard’s perspective they had seen Ivan and the other prisoners as traitors and enemies who had betrayed their country. In Ivan’s perspective he had seen himself as an innocent Russian soldier who was wrongfully accused of being a spy. If the story was told by a guard the story could show a different point of view on life in the Concentration camp. This story would be a lot different and might be active.
Take the movie "Lord of the Rings" as an example. The human race in that movie was led to believe that the uriki where the bad ones but if it was told from the side of the urici they would saay the humans where the bad ones. The urici where like the Nazis they did what ever they where told and believed it was right even if the humans thought otherwise. So if the movie/storie was told from the other end it would say that the urici where only doing good.
Writers of a story, movie, and/or play give you a certain amount of knowledge about a character. They only give you the facts they want you to know.
