All students are required to comment once a week. A week goes from Monday to Sunday. A comment can be a response to my or others' posts --- or a new post. All posts must be relevant to class discussions and assignments. Each post should be 1-3 paragraphs. Remember, it is OK to disagree with one another, but we must always be RESPECTFUL of one another.

Many people have different views on poetry and what makes it good or not. A great poem could rhyme or it could not. Even though poems could differ there are always things that make them alike. What makes a poem good is the use of literary techniques and how they make the poem flow together. Also being able to make sense of the poem and being able to relate to it is a good quality. There are many things that make up a good poem but there's not anything you must have that automatically makes a poem great.
In order to write a good poem, it must make a good point to the reader. It must involve the senses, or a deep view on something that makes the reader think. It doesn't need to be about anything in particular, but the author should have a strong opinion or emotion that backs up his or her poem- that makes it more enjoyable to read. Whether the actual message is obtainable to the reader or not, the reader must pick up something from that poem and think about it. Like a difficult line, or a strong description of something, or any of the senses like I said before. A good description of an event, feeling, thought, etc. can help the reader see it through the author's eyes or however the author wants them to see it. Any poem that engages the reader in thought of some sort is good, and a great poem teaches the reader a lesson.
mousepadBoth the poet and the audience have different views on what makes a poem good. I believe a good poem should make sense, but still make you think. A poem could capture a feeling, a situation, or any object of the poet's mind... but I personally like ones that seem to teach a lesson in its meaning. I enjoy reading (and try to write)poems with a specific set of syllables to a line. Song lyrics are for the most part like this, and with much reptition. If a poem can be easily read aloud, make sense, and be enjoying to the ear, I'll probably find it satisfactory.
There are certain things a good poem should have. Yet a poem doesn't have to have certain things to be good. A poem doesn't have to rhym and it doesn't have to have good grammer. A good poem should have some emotion. That way the reader can understand the tone of the poem, and understand the meaning as well. A poem should also have some kind of message in it. If there isn't any meaning, than it isn't as fun or meaningful to read it. One of the main purposes of a poems to express a message or ones feelings. Another thing a good poem should have is some sort of rhythem. It doesn't have to, but it makes the poem more fun to read. Good poems should include these things, but some people might disagree.
Many different poems could be considered great, depending on the different opinions of the readers. In my opinion, good poems don't have to rhyme. However, I think that they should flow nicely, and sometimes rhyming makes poems flow better. I also think that poems should use good literary techniques, such as metaphors, similes and alliterations. In addition, since poems are generally about emotion, they should be very descriptive in order to make the reader understand the emotion that is being explained. These are just a few things that make a poem ecspecially good. Whether a poem is good or not really just depends on what each individuals' opinions on poetry are. There are really no specific guidelines a poem must follow to be considered great.
I believe that a good poem has to grab its readers' attention. As we discussed in class, a poem is like a story, but it is packed into a small little piece of literature. So, if the poem cannot grab the readers' attention earlier on in the poem, then it will not be too successful, because a poem does not have an extra 150 to 1,000 pages to get to the complete point.
I agree with Allie. A poem does not need to rhyme (a large amount do not), but it does make it upbeat and fun and easy to read. When there is rhyming in the poem, the attention of the reader is easier to get. The first poem that was read in class (today) was euphonic, I think, and it was fun to read. Also, the poem about the chimney sweepers was fun to read, because the rhyming made it seem a bit more fun.
Also, many people say that a good poem needs to have the literary techniques, like: onomatopoeias, similes, metaphors, alliteration, and any other techniques. I agree with this, because the literary techniques help the reader visualize what is happening in the poem as it is read or written.
Lastly, I think a poem does not have to be abot a single thing, especially with the large variety of poems and poetry.
I think a good poem is just a poem that means something. Either to you or to someone else. A poem could just explain what you see or how you feel. It doesn't have to be deep or have mulitple meanings or anything, it just has to be something that you put some thought into. Like the poem that Williams wrote. It had about eleven words and no one in the class understood it, but somehow someone somewhere got touched by it and decided to publish it. This doesn't mean that anything that anyone writes is brillant, it just means that the writter has to have some idea of where the poem came from and what it means to them.
For a poem to be "good" it needs to have a few simple things. One, a good point. It needs to have some sort of way or symbolism that shows that the author is making a valid point. Secondly, it needs to have a good amount of flow in the play. Things that relate to one another that make the poem better overall. The third and last way it can be a good poem is like the other people said, involving the senses like anamonapia.
I don't think a great poem needs to follow much of any guidelines. Its a way to express a point or feeling and however you choose to do so. However, I do think that a poem should have greater meaning. It should make you think and experience the point the writer is trying to convey. Finding the meaning to a poem doesn't have to be easy. Also there doesn't have to have only one meaning.
Not all great poetry seems to have much in common. For example, not all poems use big words or rhym. However, there are some things that all or most good poetry have in common. In my opinion, good poetry needs to have poetic devices, such as symbols, to portrait a deeper meaning. For example, when you first read a good poem, you may have absolutely no clue what the writer is trying to say, but that is what makes it like a puzzle. You can figure out what the writer is trying to say, or atleast interpret the poem so that it relates to you some how through symbols. So most poems, wheather they be good or not, are alike in the sense that they do not make sense the first time you read them. What sets the good apart from the 'stupid' poems is the way the reader finds symbols throughout the poem to help them understand what the writer is trying to say or to relate the poem to their own life.
In my opinion a good poem should be descriptive, have a complex idea, should have an interesting topic, use a large choice of words, have a length that is moderately sized, and should be in depth and can be interpreted in more than one simple way. A good poem should be written with no grammatical errors and should have a clear and understanding point that is within reason. A good poem should include at least one literary scheme and should have a theme that can relate to everyone. A poem should have a strong and interesting beginning sentence that will interest and capture everyone’s attention. It should be able to write about a specific idea in a minimum use of words. A good poem should discuss the essential point of why it is written and should be written on a specific main idea and stay on the main idea rather than moving from one idea to another idea in a short amount of words to avoid any sort of confusion. A poem would move from one idea to another in a gradual way rather than a rapid way. A poem should be written on the writer’s experience within that topic so that the poem could be written with fluency and could be written with a feeling or emotion since if the writer could relate himself/herself to the topic it could be written with ideas that have been experienced by the poet. A good poem should discuss past experience or a new experience on that subject so that the topic could be written with a more understanding grasp and have a larger main idea rather than what you think of that subject from what you have heard. These are the essential things that a poem needs to be to be considered good.
In my opinion, good poems must have a moral at the end of them. Good poems can be about anything and everything, as long as it has some kind of significance to the writer or reader. Poems do not have a guideline to follow which makes reading and understanding them a lot easier. Good poems can be two sentences or fifty sentences; there is no definite length to them. As long as a poem has a clear message and is fun to read, it is considered a great poem to me.
New comers to poetry usually work themselves up on trying to make their poem rhythm and have a really deep meaning. To me, i think a poem needs an idea. What i mean by this is that it doesn't have to be about something specific, it just needs to be in a general area. Moreover, I personally think that a poem needs to stimulate an emotion, idea, thought, or any type of internal feeling you did not have before you read the poem.
I feel that a good poem must always have a strong centalized theme, whether it sends a large message to the reader or a small one, there always must be a theme. secondly i feel that a good pem must use literary techniques, some poems might use just one others may use all of them. one literary techniqe that may help the poem is rhythm, though it is not absolutely nessisary to a poem rhythm helps readers of all age levels get drawn to the poem. but truely there is no direct or concrete definition of what makes a good poem, becuase after all the eprson that judges a poem is the reader and of course every reader has different prefrences as to what is good or not.
A good poem must include rhythm, if it doesnt flow then it sounds kind of weird. It only sounds ok sometimes, but usually i like poems that have at least a little rhyme to it. Also poems should have a point, they shouldnt be about nothing. (unless that is your point!) But just saying random things and calling it a poem isnt good. I think there is lots of things that make a poem good, those are just two of the very many things that make a poem good.
No, I believe that poetry should have an underlining meaning that either can be sean by the audiencce or be seen by the author. It must ahev a deep meaning and a inside veiw into what the poem means. What makes a Poem god I believe is the techniques using words and deep meaing. WIthout that the poety is dull and not meaningful enough.
Not all great poems have the same attributes that make them great. Not all poems require the same attributes to make them great. They can all have different traits that make them unique and great. And, not all poems have to have rhythm. In my opinion, Poems should have imagery. Many people like, when they read a poem or a story, they like to be able to picture it in their mind. I also think great poems should have metaphors and similies. I think this because sometimes it helps people understand things batter if you compare it to something else. But I think that poems can be about whatever they want to be about because that is what makes them unique.
In my opinion poetry MUST have deep, alternate meanings. A poem with a blatent meaning is not a very good poem at all. Most of the fun of poetry is in dicifering the meanings that it could have. A one dimension poem can only be analysed once. One with many meanings could be read and thought about multiple times. A poem like The Red Wheelbarrow, for instance is a poem that I enjoy due to the fact that there is most definately not one single meaning to it. Another poem that we read in class that I enjoyed because of this was Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. There were many different ways to enterprite this poem and I enjoyed it very much.
There are so many different oppions on the view of poetry. Any great poem in my oppion should have meaning. A poem can rhyme or have any type of flow, but the true meaning to poetry is having meaning. If the poem doesnt make any sence to its reader,then...theres confusion. But theres no real guide lines to how a poem is written, just to write a poem of your thoughts and feels or anything.
A good poem must have.....meaning. I dont belive that a poem should not have a plot or a message. Leaving the ready in confusion. And i belive the poem should have imagry and metaphors helping you follow along and keep a good mental picture so the reader can kind of see what you did while writing the poem.
A good poem in my opion can have what ever the author of the poem wants it to have. A good poem needs to have what the author wants it to have. The author does not need to put really big and complicated words in it, and they don't need to make it rhym. A good poem needs to have some kind of a point to it, but it does not to be obivious. A good poem is what ever you want it to be.
