Many people have different definitions and perspectives on poetry and how they view it. Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. I like this definition of poetry because it explains everything that it is and does. I agree with it because it shows how it is expressed and how its supposed to move you emotionally. This is a very specific definition of poetry and reading it will guide you of what is expected in a poem.

I personally agree with Mark, and think that one of many things a poem does is " to evoke an emotional response.". Also, usually the poem is written from an experience the author had, or an idea.

I recently looked up a definition for poetry on my dictionary app. It said that poetry is literature in a metrical form. I agree a little with the defintion, but think that there's more to poetry than that. Poetry is also so free. The rules of grammer and formal language don't always apply in poetry. You can use slang or any accent you want. Poetry is also a wonderful form of art. You can express yourself in almost anyway with any emotion. People love poetry so much because it sets them free. They can express their emotions using poetry for any reason. Another thing about poetry is that there can be a message in it. Although you can't strangle a poem in trying to figure out what it means. You have to enjoy the poem and let it set you free.

I agree with most of this definition, because poetry is all about experiences, sounds, meanings, but rhymes are optional. If a poet wrote a poem about something they have actually experienced, then they will be able to make the poem stronger through this advantage. However, if it was written by an inexperienced person, it would be different, because they would not know the true feeling and passion for the topic. Also, as we discussed in class, poetry is meant to be spoken. Rhymes can make the poem stronger, because it makes it easier to comprehend for some people; however, there are many strong poems that have been written without rhyming.

When I looked up the definition of poetry online I found a definition of poetry that stated that poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. I agree with this definition because poetry can be a rhythmical composition(rhyming) and it can be written or spoken, but usually written. Poetry also brings exciting pleasure through descriptive and powerful words and it usually has a complex meaning. Poetry is almost always composed of beautiful, imaginative, and elevated thoughts through the use of writing in a high language and has a meaning that is thoughtful and imaginative and of a good topic. Poetry is a form of literature that is greatly-worded and creative and it usually is written out of a person’s own experience of that topic and has a clear flow of descriptive words with a imaginative composition of its own. I agree and like this definition of poetry for these reasons.

One of the definitions of poetry from dictionary.com is the art of rythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. I like this definition because it gives a basic definition of every aspect of poetry. Poetry can be sometimes rhyming. Also, you can read it or say the poem. Poetry can also, give you imaginative thoughts using imagery.

Poetry is a form of literature, made of stanzas, that uses common poetic devices, such as similie, metaphor, alliteration, and symbols through imagery to paint a picture that tell helps tell the reader what the poem is saying. I think this definition explains what makes a poem different from other peices of literature. It describes what a poem consists of.

there are many types of definitions online that i have researched and many of those definitions conclude to the same point every time that there is no real definiton of poetry, becuase poetry can be written in many ways, there are not many rules when writting poetry to writting a language, there can be rhymes in the poetry, the rhymes dont have to make much sense as long as there is some what of an explanation in what the the writter is trying to get through to you. one poetry definition online says that poetry is a way of expressing his/her self by emotions in a rhythmic pattern of words.

I find thar where ever you may look there is a reoccuring statement in the definition of poetry, it is that it does not have to rhyme. Along with the word rhyme another word that is present in most of the definitions is enterpritation. I find that the most easily interpritated quote about poetry is Poetry is more than just rhyming. In fact, poetry doesn't even have to rhyme. The main ingrediants are movement and sound. These two things along with feeling make up what poetry is... I find this is an importnant quote becuase it is not overly complicated and may interpritated by all allges, becasue after all poetry is for anymone of all ages. I also feel that the definition is importnant becuase it says it may be expressed through movement adn sound. i agree with the fact that poetry needs to move you or motivate you.

"Poetry is the chiseled marble of language; it's a paint-spattered canvas - but the poet uses words instead of paint, and the canvas is you... One of the most definable characteristics of the poetic form is economy of language. Poets are miserly and unrelentingly critical in the way they dole out words to a page. Carefully selecting words for conciseness and clarity is standard, even for writers of prose, but poets go well beyond this, considering a word's emotive qualities, its musical value, its spacing, and yes, even its spacial relationship to the page. The poet, through innovation in both word choice and form, seemingly rends significance from thin air."

This is a long definition of poetry, I know, but I liked this one for many reasons. For one thing, almost everyone posted the same definition for poetry so I wanted to find a different one. For another, the definition of poetry is very complex, which is proven by this long segment I posted above. The real definition of poetry is different to everyone, for there is no real definition. In my opinion, poetry is putting nice-looking words together to make a point, or describe something like an emotion or event. It can rhyme sometimes, but it doesn't have to. Poetry is very confusing to most, sort of like the definition I used- hard to understand, but anyone can view it and its meaning differently.

Art of rythmical composition written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.I think despite the shortness of the definition it clearly explains what poetry is.
-dictionary.com

The key, I believe to this is that is says that it is spoken or written not limiting it's self to just being written. Then it gives the following senses, of beautiful, imaginative or elevated thoughts explaining how the prom should feel like when being presented. lastly the art of rythmical compositions gives you the guide lines of how to write a poem.

Poetry: The art of apprehending and interpreting ideas by the faculty of imagination: the art of idealizing in thought and in expression.
I think that this is a good definition of poetry, although you can probably write a whole essay on what poetry is, this is a good sum up of it. Poetry is an art of the imagination. Although this definition doesn't say that there are many kinds of poetry and all the literary devices that are avalible to use, it is very good because it explains that you must use your imagination which, in my opinion, is the most important part of poetry and coming up with the lines. Without imagination, poetry would be boring and there would be no similies or mediphors which makes the poem exciting to read and interprate.

Poetry: A way to express one's self using organized pieces of literature which use poetic devices and carefully placed words. I came up with this definition myself and I believe it is close to a correct definition. Defining poetry is very hard due to the fact that poetry can be classified as other types of literature and in some classes, it is very hard to pin poetry if the piece has factors that other literature has.

I agree with this definition of poetry. Yes,peotry can be imaginative and have experience through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices but there is no real definition, its impossible.

"any communication resembling poetry in beauty or the evocation of feeling" I found this on google and i do in a way belive that it does tell truth. Because poetry is expressing ones feelings and it allows youo to let you speak your mind. But i dont agree that all poetry is always beauty, poetry can be evil and talk about the bad in life and not the good. Not all poems have a good message but some i believe shoud be labled "READ WITH CAUTION!"

There are many different defintions of Poetry but I believe that Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. Poetry can be about what ever you want it to be. Some poems are made so that there is no set point to the poem. It is made so the reader can make up their own decision on what a poem is. I think that poetry is what you want it to be, it is for exciting pleasure by beartiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.
