Read the short poem below titled “Poison Tree” by William Blake. Connect it to Poe and revenge – specifically, the consequences of holding pain, anger, or shame inside.
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe;
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I water'd it in fears,
Night & morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with my smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,
And into my garden stole
When the night had veil'd the pole:
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretch'd beneath the tree

I think that the poem relates to Poe because they are both almost in the same situation. They are both mad at their friends for something. Also, they both want to get revenge on the person. I believe that if you bottle up your emotions that eventually they will get worse, especially revenge emotions. Also, both the people i these writings get revenge on their friends. This revenge is the highest of all revenge.
i believe that this poem can relate to the fellings of Poe becuase as said above (tfranklin) that they are both in the same situation. both poeple have the same fellings , that they once were thier friends but they did some thing and they felt that they needed revenge but they held it inside for too long so they got worse when they finally got the chance they did the unthinkable and they killed thier friend, thats not really revenge in my mind killing a friend. it almost seems that this poem was written about the feelings of poe, almost like this is the poetic way of sybolizing his feelings. i feel that if they had not held thier anger inside that they wouldnt have killed thier long time friend and they just would have done something else to them that wasn too bad, but in doing so they let thier emotions build up and they ended up killing thier buddy. the right thing to do would have been to stop and be the bigger man and say if this keeps going its really going to end up bad, but when you are really mad you dont really see that and you just want revenge, so thats probably why they didnt just stop. although its a tough lesson sometimes when revenge gets too bad you just need to stop, even if you dont get the last word.
