Dramatic Irony

Dramatic Irony is the effect of having the audience (or reader) know something people on stage (or in the story) do not know. Explore either a) the effect dramatic irony has on story-telling, or b) an example of this in a movie, play, or story.

Dramiitic irony is the effect of having the audience know something that the people on stage do not know. There are many effects of dramatic irony. Sometimes it gives some people a sense of excitement. They get this feeling because they know something before it happens and they don't know exactly when it is going to happen. One play that uses dramatic irony is the play we are reading in class,Othello by William Shakespeare. One part of the story is a line said by Iago. This is after Desdemona has told her father and the council that she was indeed married to Othello. Iago talks about how he is going to lie and say that Desdemona and Michael Cassio were together. He says this directly to the audience. It uses dramitic irony by Iago telling the audience his plan before he executes his plan.

Dramatic irony can have a great effect on stories, movies, plays, and more. The audience always wants to know what's going to happen or what the characters are thinking. When we know something the characters in the play do not, we get anxious about how the characters will react when they find out what we know. We want to tell them in a way, but knowing we can't, we are drawn to watch and see what happens when they do and how they find out. A couple years ago I saw the movie Invisible, which is about a boy that was killed and has to tell people somehow where he is in order to save himself (it's kind of hard to explain the story). The audience and main character both know what happened to him, but the rest of the people in the movie don't and personally, I found it really exciting because I wanted the people to know so badly that I simply had to keep watching the movie.

The effect that dramatic irony has on story-telling is that it makes it more exciting for the audience. If the audience knows something that the characters do not, they than become more interested to see how the story's characters will react once they find out.Dramatic irony is a positive effect in any play, movie, or story This is because it can hold the attention of the audience, since they are aware that what they know will occur at some point in the story, or will have an exciting reaction once the characters figure it out, as well. In plays or movies I have seen, dramtic irony has been common. It is most likely present in many stories in some way because it adds intrest. Not all stories use dramatic irony but the ones that do use it in some way are generally more interesting.

Dramatic Irony is meant to create tension in a book or movie. IT allows the reader to pay more attention becuase they already know that something is going to happen. It almost makes the reader or viewer feel smart. This causes tension because the reader or viewer knows it is coming that the main character doesnt know. The director or author can use dramatic irony to add to the entertianment in the book or movie. For example there is dramatic irony when the readers of "othello" by shakespear learn that iago is going to make it look like cassio and desemona are having a relationship. The readers know that othello is going to find out, they just dont know when.

A. Having Dramatic Irony is a good indication for the people viewing the play what mite happen next. It gives the viewers something to look foward to and keep them on there toes. It keeps the play exciteing and it makes the views think more so they dont fall a sleep. It gives them sone sort in of insite.b) You can relate it to when Desdamona gets married to Othello and het father has no idea.

It was hard know that Desdamona was a goner and we all knew she was going to be killed. But it was also exciteing to see what would lead up to her death. The dramatic Irony allowed us to know things that the charicters do not. It was very funny to see that Desdamona did not know what was going on and to see she had no self respect taking every sort of abuse that Othello threw at her. Even when it was not only Verbal but Physical. When Othello smacked Desdamona in the face all she could say was "I will not stay to offend you. We all knew why Othello was mad when all Desdamona was confused and hopeless.

Having dramatic irony in a story gives it a great effect. Dramatic irony can cause many effects on the audience that is totally irrelivant to the story. While one thing might be going on, another is happening that the wholse cast of other characters in the play does not know about, but the audience does. This can change the way people view the play. Like Taylor said, it can cause excitement while watching the play because they know when something is going to happen but not sure exactly whta time it will. Also, like Alex said it can cause tension during the course of the play.
