In a Raisin in the sun, Mama keeps mentioning about her plant and how it has little light, it doesn't have a large area to grow, and it needs more to keep it alive. Although this is true about the plant itself, it is a symbol for her family. Her family has literally one window for sunlight. They also are cramped in a small area and need a bigger home to grow and live in. This shows how their family can be compared to the plant and that their needs are quite similar. This also shows how much Mama cares about her family and only wants the best for them. Symbols are good comparisons for situations like this.

One of the symbols I admere in this play would be the plant that Mama keeps by the window. The plant symbolizes the Younger family and how they are. The plant is a little weak and only gets a little sunlight. The Younger's relationship with each other is also weak and survives on little income. They are always arguing and fighting with each other that one could assume that they aren't family at all. When Mama buys a new house for the family, she plans to grow a big, beautiful garden in the backyard. This also symbolizes that when the family moves, since there will be more room and less worries they will argue less. The family will become more loving and stronger. I really like the symbolizism of the plant by the window.

A symbol that i find to be interesting in A Rasin In The Sun is the "robe" that Asagi(spelling) gave to Benetha. I find this interesting because it shows how Hansberry does not only incorperate the African American culture but also the African culture itself in her play. The robe symbolizes the conflict between culture and assimilation as we discussed in class. Even though we decided that Mr. Asagi was the true symbol of this factor of the story. I like to think that this was also a symbol more for Benetha herself because it is always with her even when Asagi isn't.

A symbol that I noticed in The Raisin in the sun was when Benetha cut off her hair. This symbol is not an object so it is a little bit harder to compare. Benetha cutting her hair symbolizes her need to stay out of the stereotype of women in her time period. There are many things in the play that symbolize this but I chose this one because short hair is often stereotypical of males and not females even today. Benetha is also trying to express herself and there are examples of this throughout the play. There is a refrence to this when she comes home from guitar lessons and Mama and Ruth are making fun of her for trying something new every year. There are many examples of symbolism in the Raisin in the Sun and this is one of many.

In a Raisin in the Sun, I think there was a symbol thatI thought could be very important to one of the charactwers. That character is Walter. When Mama got ten thousand dollars, Walter wanted her to give the money to him so that he could invest in a liquor store. I think this is a symbol for many reasons. One is that when Mama doesn't give him the money he goes out and drinks with his friends. He comes home drunk and doesn't realize that it is hurting his family. I believe that if Walter were to invest in the store, that him coming home drunk could be a daily thing. So, i believe that Walter coming home drunk from a night out with his friends is a symbol. It is a symbol that if Walter did actually get the store, It could be very dangerous and he would be getting drunk more often.

In Raisin in the Sun, there is a symbol that could work towards most of the Younger family. This symbol is money, but not only the money that Mama has received. The symbol (money) applies to Walter Younger. Walter desperately wants the money that Mama received, in order to put up his $10,000 part of the bargain. Walter wants this money to invest into a liquor store, along with two other people. With this money, Walter can finally be able to invest money and supposedly make an extremely large amount of money after a few weeks, months, or years. This way, Walter can be more of a provider for his family, and he would feel like he was the head of the family and not feel like Mama controls everything they do and think.

In "A Raisin in ithe Sun", by Lorraine Hansberry, I found a symbol that represents multiple things. I think the liquor store is a symbol itself for two reasons: Because a liquor store is the type of company he wants to invest in and support his family with the money he makes from it. However, this liquor store is also where he is running off to to get drunk each day that he doesn't
invest in the liquor store. This symbol represents two different things: a) what could potentially bring happiness to him and his family. b) the place where he'll go if the investment goes wrong; it will bring sadness and anger to him and the rest of the family. The liquor store represents multiple things.

A lot of the symbols that are in a Raisin in the sun have already been used. However, one that hasn't been used is the Light. Throughout what we have read the light has described the overall mood of the family. In the beginning of the book the Light in the apartment is dark and gloomy, but as the book goes on and the family gets the new house Mama says there is a lot of light in the house. This is a turning point in the book. It shows how things are happier. In the beginning of the book there is little light. That symbolizes sadness. With the new house there is a lot of light. That symbolizes happiness.

In A Raisin Int The Sun, by Lorraine Hansburry, I thought that one important symbol could be the large check that the family recieves in the mail. This is a big symbol on the fact that it is a hard time for the family. Not only this, but it shows that the family's relationship has grown weaker due to stress about money. This was shown by the fact that all the family talked about was the check; when it was coming and what to do with it. The check also symbolizes the family's fear. They seem to be afraid of their shortage of money, as is portrayed when Ruth won't give Travis a quarter for school. When the check shows up, they all seem a little more relieved. There have been many good symbols in this book so far, but I thought that this one had a strong meaning because it shows the thought and tensions of the family.

A symbol in "A Raisin in the Sun" is the check that comes in the mail. The whole family has worked very hard their whole lives, and because of a death they will get a large sum of money. This money can make it so walter can own a liquor store, or Beneatha can go to medical school, or Mama could own a house. The check represents their dreams, $10,000 worth of dreams. The family becomes very rich, and because of this it tears the family apart for a while. At the very end of the book the check ends up making the family stronger than ever.
